Nerding & Learning: Applying Geek Culture to the K-12 Classroom (Educator Panel)

How might we turn our nerdy interests and geeky delights into powerful learning in the classroom? Join us for an interactive showcasing, brainstorming, iterating and networking session as we explore ways to integrate comics, video games, Dr. Who, Buffy, Star Wars and more into the content areas. All classroom educators, librarians, administrators, parents, students and edu-oriented folk welcome!
Current educators with work ID who attend the program will receive a complimentary Day Pass for the BangPop! Comic Con on Saturday.

11 am
The Graphic Library (Educator Panel)

Comics and graphic novels have grown beyond the confines of comic shops and even book stores and are now ubiquitous, popular presences in public and academic libraries throughout the country. This panel, aimed at educators and the general public alike, will discuss the processes of getting comics and graphic novels into libraries, collection development, challenges, success stories, and of course, title suggestions to seek out and/or add to library collections.
Current educators with work ID who attend the program will receive a complimentary Day Pass for the BangPop! Comic Con on Saturday.

Don’t be a D___: Keeping Fandom Fun, Safe & Inclusive

Being a geek is supposed to be fun (presumably this is why we got into whatever we’re into in the first place), but there are sometimes negative attitudes (and the people who foster them) lying in wait to try to ruin that fun. Certain events in recent years – aggressive anger toward Twihards at Comic-Con; the “fake geek girl” meme; cosplayer harassment; threats of physical and/or sexual violence against commentators; reactive memes that try to blame the victims (e.g., “#notallmen”); and social media campaigns against creators, to name but a few – make it seem as if such negativity is more widespread than ever. But is this really the case?

The purpose of this panel discussion is to help identify some of the problems and their root causes, and hopefully outline some strategies that everyone, victims and their allies alike, can enact to make our fandoms safe and fun for everyone. Is it as simple as trying to follow Wheaton’s Law (“Don’t be a d—.”), or do we need to take a more proactive approach? Members of the panel will discuss their experiences, ideas, and proposed solutions, and members of the audience will be invited to do the same. We cannot promise to save fandom forever, but hopefully we’ll all walk away with some ideas on how to keep it safe and inclusive for everyone.
